Excessive clenching or grinding of teeth

If your loved ones have mentioned that you grind your teeth, or you’ve noticed you have more frequent headaches or jaw pain, you may be suffering as a result of bruxism, which is excessive clenching or grinding of the teeth.

There could be a number of reasons for this. Physical stress plays a part, such as if you’re sick or dehydrated, and psychological stress (anxiety and tension) do too. We also know that abnormal anatomy of your teeth or jaw can cause an improper bite, which can lead to clenching or grinding your teeth.

Left untreated, bruxism behaviour can lead to the symptoms described above, or in a worst case scenario, lead to teeth being ground down to the gum line.

Luckily, your dentist can help you treat bruxism. If you think that it’s a problem, talk to your dentist about what can be done.
