Treatment of gum infections

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease or periodontitis, is a term that we use to describe conditions that affect the tissue around your teeth. If your gums bleed when you brush, or they’re very sensitive, or if you’ve noticed they seem to be receding, or if you have a problem with bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth, you may have gum disease. Gum disease is caused by bacteria, which form on your teeth around the gum line.

There’s a growing body of evidence that the health of your gums is linked to the health of the rest of your body. If you catch it early, gum disease can be treated successfully but it can also be affected by lifestyle factors (such as whether you smoke or drink), some medications, stress, pregnancy and some illnesses.

One of the best ways to address periodontal disease is by visiting our hygienists. A hygienist’s job is to bring your mouth and gums to their optimal healthy state, and they’re extremely good at it. And they’re lovely people, too!
